A Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup Recipe That Will Make You Smile

We have all been there. We wake up to the sunrise and start our routine with making our morning cup of Joe. Or we take an afternoon break to get a pick me up from an iced coffee. But as we get ready to sweeten up our java we stop ourselves in our tracks, not sure what the right thing to do is. We are supposed to be avoiding sugars and artificial sweeteners right? They are may not be healthy, not to mention the unsustainable packaging they sit in. We feel guilty for throwing nutrition to the wind but natural sweeteners that taste good are hard to find. We feel guilty for hurting the environment. There goes all the fun of drinking our coffee!

Palm sugar is a delicious and wonderfully sustainable option for coffee sweetener. Unlike palm oil's bad reputation, palm sugar is developed from greener methods. Rather than cutting down trees, palm sugar comes from the sap of standing trees. With palm trees producing sap for anywhere from 10 to 100 years, a live tree can gift us lots and lots of sweet and delicious sugar.

Palm sugar also contains more vitamins and minerals than traditional sweeteners, and has a lower glycemic index with less glucose than sugar.

This vanilla bean palm sugar simple syrup recipe is a great way to create your own natural sweetener at home. Place it in a mason jar and refrigerate for repeated uses. It goes great in hot or iced coffee recipes as well!  

Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup palm sugar coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 vanilla bean

Slice vanilla bean down the center and scrape out the tiny black seeds. Add both seeds and the vanilla bean with palm sugar and water in small pot. Stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved completely, and mixture has come to a boil (typically about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool.

Pour into reusable glass container or mason jar and store in refrigerator (usually keeps for up to about a week).
